ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮ; ੩ ॥
SHALOK, THIRD MEHL:
सलोक म: ३ ||
- ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding, if one performs it with his mind focused on it.
सतगुर की सेवा सफल है जे को करे चित लाए ||
- ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਣਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
The fruits of the mind’s desires are obtained, and egotism departs from within.
मन चिंदिआ फल पावणा हउमै विचह जाए ||
- ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord.
बंधन तोड़े मुक्त होए सच्चे रहे समाए ||
- ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh.
इस जग मह नाम अलभ है गुरमुख वसै मन आए ||
- ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. || 1 ||
नानक जो गुर सेवह अपना हओ तिन बलहारे जाओ || १ ||
- ਮ; ੩ ॥ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੰਨੁ ਅਜਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
THIRD MEHL: The mind of the self-willed manmukh is so very stubborn; it is stuck in the love of duality.
म : ३ || मनमुख मन अजित है दूजे लगे जाए ||
- ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
He does not find peace, even in dreams; he passes his life in misery and suffering.
तिस नो सुख सुपने नहीं दुखे दुख विहाइ ||
- ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਥਕੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇ ॥
The Pandits have grown weary of going door to door, reading and reciting their scriptures; the Siddhas have gone into their trances of Samaadhi.
घर घर पढ़ पढ़ पंडित थके सिद्ध समाधि लगाए ||
- ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
This mind cannot be controlled; they are tired of performing religious rituals.
एह मन वस न आवहि थके कर्म कमाए ||
- ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥
The impersonators have grown weary of wearing false costumes, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines.
भेखधारी भेख कर थके अठसठ तीर्थ नाए ||
- ਮਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
They do not know the state of their own minds; they are deluded by doubt and egotism.
मन की सार न जाणनी हउमै भरम भुलाए ||
- ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਭਉ ਪਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
By Guru’s Grace, the Fear of God is obtained; by great good fortune, the Lord comes to abide in the mind.
गुर परसादी भओ पाया वडभाग वसिआ मन आए ||
- ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥
When the Fear of God comes, the mind is restrained, and through the Word of the Shabad, the ego is burnt away.
भै पाइए मन वस होआ हउमै शब्द जलाए
- ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Those who are imbued with Truth are immaculate; their light merges in the Light.
सच रते से निर्मले जोति जोत मिलाए ||
- ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ ਪਉੜੀ ॥
Meeting the True Guru, one obtains the Name; O Nanak, he is absorbed in peace. || 2 || PAUREE:
सतगुर मिलिए नाओ पाया नानक सुख समाए || २ || पवड़ी ||
- ਏਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਰਾਣੇ ਰੰਗ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥
The pleasures of kings and emperors are pleasing, but they last for only a few days.
एह भूपत राणे रंग दिन चार सुहावना ||
- ਏਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥
These pleasures of Maya are like the color of the safflower, which wears off in a moment.
यह माया रंग कसुंभ खिन मह लह जावना ||
- ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਪ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥
They do not go with him when he departs; instead, he carries the load of sins upon his head.
चलदिआ नाल न चले सिर पाप लै जावना ||
- ਜਾਂ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਕਾਲਿ ਤਾਂ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥
When death seizes him, and marches him away, then he looks absolutely hideous.
जां पकड़ चलाया काल तां खरा डरावना ||
- ਓਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੬॥
That lost opportunity will not come into his hands again, and in the end, he regrets and repents. || 6 ||

His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord. It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh. O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. || 1 ||
